HORSES OF THE WORLD
FURIOSO
Origin:
Europe - Hungary
|
|
History:
In 1784 the Emperor Josef II founded the famous Hungarian stud Mezohegyes
which soon became one of Europe's great breeding centres. The Furioso was developed by
crossing Thoroughbred stallions with mainly Hungarian mares. One of the main influences
were the English Thoroughbred stallions, Furioso, bought in 1841, which gave the breed its
name and North Star acquired in the 1850's. For a while the two blood lines were kept
separate.
North Star, believed to be a descendant of the Norfolk Roadster, produced great harness
racehorses and Furioso produced good heavy weight riding horses. At the end of the 19th
century the two lines merged with the Furioso becoming the dominant breed. It is slightly
heavier than its Thoroughbred ancestors. In Hungry large herds of horses are traditionally
raised on grasslands.
