History:
The Hungarian Babolna stud founded by Emperor Josef II in 1789 imported the tall Syrian bred stallion Shagya in 1836 who gave the breed its name. He was mated with quality Hungarian mares of mixed blood including Hungarian, Thoroughbred, Arabian and Spanish origin, all with an eastern overall appearance. Interbreeding produced a taller and bigger framed horse than the standard Arabian by still keeping an overall Arabian appearance. The Shagya is an elegant, tough, quality riding horse and was a popular cavalry mount before the start of mechanisation.
