History:
The South German horse is a descendant of the Noriker which was introduced to Bavaria in southern Germany at the end of the 19th century. Breeders in Lower Bavaria tried to improve their stock with Oldenburg, Cleveland Bay and Belgian Draught horses. In Upper Bavaria they used Holsteiner and Oldenburg horses.
Eventually German breeders upgraded their horses with the original Noriker and the breed became known as the South German Heavy Horse. Today the main breeding areas are in Bavaria and Baden Wuertemburg. The South German still resembles the Noriker but does not stand as tall.
